How We Treat Self-Harm Through Dialectical Behavior Therapy
DBT was built specifically for people who feel emotions more intensely than others and who turn to self-harm as a way to manage that intensity. At Nulife, DBT is the core of our self-harm treatment program. Patients learn four concrete skill sets: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These aren't abstract ideas. We practice them in session and give you tools you can use the same day.
DBT also includes individual therapy alongside skills groups, so you get both personal attention and the chance to learn alongside others who understand what you're going through. Many patients tell us the group component changed how they see their own patterns. Hearing someone else name what you've been feeling quietly for years is a powerful part of healing.
Self-Harm or Suicidal Ideation: Getting the Right Level of Care
Self-harm and suicidal ideation often appear together, but they don't always mean the same thing and they don't always require the same response. Some people who engage in self-harm have no intent to end their life. Others are experiencing active suicidal thoughts that need immediate clinical attention. Our intake team knows how to assess the difference and place you in the right program from the start.
If you're not sure which applies to your situation, that's fine. Come in and talk to us. Our job is to ask the right questions, not yours. Nulife's outpatient structure means we can provide intensive support without a hospital stay for many patients, which makes it easier for people to say yes to getting help.
